Educational Assistants

 

Heartland Agency’s EvenStart Program offers holistic support services to children, many from backgrounds of poverty, trauma, abuse, and neglect. EvenStart provides programming that supports the growth and development of children’s social-emotional and learning needs within a centre-based setting, offering the support of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of teachers, educational assistants and therapists.

 

Position Details:

The EA implements and facilitates daily classroom plans under the supervision and direction of the classroom teacher. Working with at-risk children, many who have come from backgrounds of trauma, abuse neglect and poverty, you must be able to bring laughter, understanding, and creativity with you to work each day.

 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Create a safe and nurturing environment for children using a strength-based, trauma informed approach
  • Collaborate with therapy, classroom, and management teams to provide holistic programming that meets children where they are at
  • Develop and implement activities and strategies to address individual goals
  • Organize, prepare and implement strategies for children to address unique needs (e.g., visual schedules, curriculum modifications, sensory strategies, etc.)
  • Assist children in play activities to address their goals within a Reggio Emilia inspired environment
  • Provide behavioural support to children with complex needs/challenging behaviours in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Communicate child progress to parents and caregivers through in-home visits
  • Assist with self-help skills where needed, including eating, toileting and dressing
  • Assist with classroom maintenance, material preparation and set-up
  • Participation in up to 2 bussing components throughout the day

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Alberta Child Care Certification (can be obtained upon hire within a designated time frame)
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to obtain a Class 4 license (costs and training covered by Heartland)
  • First aid certification & criminal record check with vulnerable sector check (can be obtained upon hire within a designated time frame)
  • Experience with a special needs population is an asset

Preschool or Kindergarten Teacher with Behaviour & Special Needs Experience

As the leader in the classroom, your role is to inspire those around you and bring joy to the classroom environment. Working with at-risk children, many who have come from backgrounds of trauma, abuse neglect and poverty, you must be able to bring laughter, understanding, and creativity with you to work each day. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Create a safe and nurturing environment for children
  • Plan, prepare and facilitate centre-based learning under a Reggio Emilia inspired framework
  • Plan for the development of the whole child, and for modifications required for individual children
  • Meet deadlines for completion of required paperwork (e.g., IPPs, progress reports, day plans, etc.)
  • Communicate child progress to parents and caregivers through in-home visits
  • Collaborate with therapy, classroom, and management teams
  • Assist with self-help skills where needed, including eating, toileting and dressing
  • Participate in one bussing component daily

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education degree; early childhood education and/or special education would be a definite asset; related experience and education (e.g., Child Development Supervisor/Level 3 certification) may be considered for this position
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license; willingness to obtain a Class 4 driver’s license (costs and training covered by Heartland)
  • First aid certification & criminal record check (can be obtained upon hire within a designated time frame)
  • Experience/knowledge around working in a Reggio inspired environment is an asset; willingness and openness to learn more about this approach is required
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)

 

Heartland Agency’s Evenstart Preschool Program offers services to children, many from backgrounds of poverty, trauma, abuse, and neglect. Heartland provides children with a program that supports the growth and development of their social-emotional and learning needs within a multi-disciplinary centre-based setting. The multi-disciplinary team consists of teachers, teaching assistants, therapy professionals (SLP, OT, PT, Psych) and therapy assistants. We encourage independence, creativity, and implementing new ideas, and we support each other through the clinical team.

We are currently seeking an energetic and dynamic individual to join our Agency as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). Positions are available at our Mayland Heights location (1625 18thStreet NE) which will commence on August 26th, 2024.

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) is responsible for providing support to the Speech-Language Pathologist in the implementation of the children’s programs. This individual must demonstrate the ability to work closely with the therapists and teachers in creating a therapeutic, stimulating and nurturing environment. In addition, this individual must possess good organizational skills and the ability to work independently, as well as function as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

 

Duties:

  • Implement therapists’ goals
  • Documentation and record keeping of daily activities with each child
  • Plan individual, group and classroom sessions that target individual goals
  • Support the implementation of strategies to target articulation, comprehension, social communication and expressive language goals
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team; attend meetings to discuss individual child progress
  • Plan and prepare materials necessary for therapy implementation
  • Participate in at least one bussing component daily
  • Additional duties as assigned by Site Manager to support daily operational needs

 

Education:

  • Speech Language Pathologist Assistant diploma preferred; education in a related field (i.e., rehabilitation, special education, disability studies, etc.) will be considered; previous experience with children is required
  • Alberta Child Care Certification level (can be obtained upon hire within a designated time frame)

Daycare Educator Level 2 or Level 3 in Monterey Park

 

The Heartland Agency, Monterey Park currently operates a daycare centre in North East Calgary. As our program continues to expand, we are looking for compassionate and creative Early Childhood Educator with a level 2 or 3 to join our daycare team (please note the wage does not includes top up).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Plan and facilitate activities that stimulate children’s natural curiosity and support their individual skills and abilities
  • Provide a welcoming and supportive environment to children and families
  • Follow and integrate the core concepts of the Play, Participation and Possibilities Curriculum Framework
  • Work within Licensing and Accreditation regulations, Health and Safety practices and protocols, program goals and Agency philosophy
  • Observe, assess and document program activities as well as children’s individual development and progress
  • Assist with classroom maintenance, material preparation, set up and clean up
  • Assist the children with self-help skills where needed, including toileting and diapering
  • Be energetic, motivated, caring and supportive

Qualifications and Requirements: * Alberta Child Care Certification level 2 or 3

  • 2 to 4 years experience working with children ages 19 months to 5 years with a variety of abilities & skills.
  • Current First Aid certification is required
  • Current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector check) is required
  • Knowledge of the Play, Participation and Possibilities Curriculum Framework is an asset
  • Awareness of Trauma-Informed Care practices is an asset
  • Experience with children with diverse needs is an asset

Occupational Therapy Assistant
